Hanukkah Decorating Ideas

Hanukkah is a very special time of year on the Jewish calendar.  Known as the Festival of Lights, it is an eight-day celebration of many events important to the Jewish faith, and most prominently the miracle of a one-day supply of lamp oil that burned for eight days.  It is a great time for family and friends to get together, and if you are hosting a Hanukkah party this year, here are some great decorating ideas to set the scene!

More Than A Menorah!

If you are Jewish, or have hosted a Hanukkah party before, then you probably already have a menorah, but there are lots of other ways to decorate your home for the Festival of Lights!  The traditional colors of the season are blue, silver, and white, and given its timing as a winter holiday there are a lot of potential decorating ideas.

For your dining room, use a blue tablecloth coordinated with silver and white placemats and a menorah for the centerpiece.  Try to find, or if you are crafty, make placemats that feature the Star of David, preferably in colors matching the table setting.  Accent your table with coordinating dinnerware and wrap your silverware in matching napkins.

A Hanukkah bush is also a traditional and seasonal way to decorate for the holiday.  Hanukkah bushes are usually available from a nursery or tree lot in most areas, and you can decorate the bush with lights in the traditional blue, silver, and white.  Also, adding Hanukkah-themed ornaments like menorahs, a Star of David, and dreidels will add an extra touch to the finished product.  Lighting doesn’t have to end with your Hanukkah bush.  You can use festive lights around your home in different places such as windows and across the mantle.  You can also use candles to set the mood for events, though you need to be sure to keep them away from flammable objects.

This holiday is a great time to get the whole family involved, and creating crafts with the kids to help decorate can really begin a family tradition.  You can create your own centerpieces or do a Hanukkah-themed piece of needlework.  There really is no end to the creative decorating ideas you can use for the holidays!
